SANGHA: Apartments

Suzhou, China

Sangha, a pedestrian oriented live-work-learn community focused on helping people learn to live well (physically, emotionally, and socially), is a 46-acre development located on Yangcheng Lake, a UNESCO world heritage site on the periphery of Suzhou, China, that features single-family residences, apartments, hotels, a medical clinic, an East/West wellness center, a food hall and food markets, a conference/learning center, a childhood learning center, and an innovation gallery among numerous other components.

One of Sangha’s key components is its collection of apartments. Nearby the Fellow Traveler hotel, a series of three-story apartment buildings are lifted on concrete piloti above bench-lined fountains and reflecting pools. Eighty-seven apartments are available in three plans: 1, 1 ½, and 2 bedrooms, ranging from 750 sq. ft. to 1,400 sq. ft. The architects availed themselves of economies of scale to outfit the apartment interiors with amenities similar to the rooms of At One Hotel, including custom built-in wooden cabinetry and warm, natural fabrics. Design details were developed for space-expanding visual effects such as vaulted ceilings, and for ease and convenience in daily needs from floating book shelfs to built-in umbrella stands and mail drops incorporated into each apartment’s entry.

The apartments can be purchased or rented. Many units are specially designed to accommodate the physically handicapped and are in close proximity to the food hall and markets, Town Hall, and other social and health centers, as well as being near single family residences – in anticipation of apartments being occupied by older residents to be near their grown children’s homes and Sangha’s health services.
