The Living Room by Octave is the adaptive re-use of an historic structure into a 21,500 sq. ft. learning center in downtown Shanghai. The center is a hub for services including children’s programs, family therapy, art therapy, yoga, body works, a health-oriented restaurant with food and beverage programs, and a small-scale urban farm.

The Forbidden City, Beijing
The project resurrects and reconfigures three long-gone buildings destroyed by fire in the Forbidden City. Before beginning the design process, we proposed new uses for the site and developed its program: a multipurpose reception center and flexible exhibition space set within a larger museum compound. The spaces, circulation, lighting, and furnishings are designed to accommodate these uses.

The Robin Hood Foundation asked us to design a prototypical library for New York City’s public grammar schools. Our prototype eventually was installed in five schools. Collaborating with teachers, education specialists, and the young students, we sought to improve the function and potential of libraries as places for interaction and discovery while enhancing teachers’ abilities to implement curricula.
